About the Program

Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) can be a highly effective tool for preserving a company’s legacy and culture, while allowing owners a tax-efficient way to transition ownership of their businesses and create liquidity. This session will explain how and why ESOPs are used for ownership succession in privately held businesses by:

  • Explaining what an ESOP is, how ESOP transactions are structured, and how ESOPs operate over time
  • Delving into the advantages and drawbacks of using an ESOP for ownership succession
  • Describing the characteristics of strong, and weak, ESOP candidates
  • Providing case studies to help participants visualize how an ESOP may work for their clients
